Harper(1948) 建議incisal edge of upper central incisors應該在center of papilla的前緣5-8mm, 但是Hickey et al(1962),Martone(1963),Murray(1977), Mavrokoufis&Richie(1981)認為應該是在前緣的8-10mm. Schiffman(1964)則是認為canine的連線會通過這一點. Maritato&Douglas(1964)認為denture inner border向下的垂直線可以當做labial contour的參考.
Johnson(1967)的研究指出上顎前牙拔牙後前三年骨頭變化大, Watt&Likeman(1974)的研究指出因為上顎前牙區拔牙後的吸收, incisive papilla會向前移1.6mm而向上移2.3mm.所以之後的研究傾向於使用papilla的後緣因為相對于前緣的移動量較小.
Erlich&Gazit(1975)認為labial surface of central incisor會在papilla 的posterior border前12-13mm. 這篇文章的作者就依此為標準, 去量測67位CD患者以及60位沒有缺牙的患者的left upper central incisor labial surface跟incisive papilla後緣的距離.
